ALEXANDER CALDER

Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American artist known for his innovation in kinetic sculpture. Born into a family of artists, he initially studied mechanical engineering before dedicating himself to art. Calder's most recognizable works consist of brightly colored abstract shapes that hang and move in the air. He coined the term "mobiles" to describe his kinetic sculptures that sway in response to the environment. His sculptures also include the iconic stationary forms known as "stabiles." Calder's work laid the groundwork for modernism in sculpture, and his approach to form and movement continues to inspire artists around the world.
